The last week for AirTran Airlines and their customers has been a very positive time for a number of reasons. In a recently released report the discount airline ranked first in terms of overall quality rating. This report evaluates the 16 largest commercial airlines in the United States and it was authored by professors from Purdue University and Wichita State University. Now this report is certainly good news for AirTran Airline’s customers as they can be assured of a good experience, but in other recent news the company has announced many reduced fares for summer travel. AirTran Airlines is currently running several specials to a variety of destinations for summer travel if you book now. The timing of the two events is great for the company as they get some press on how well they are doing and then offer some excellent rates for many of their flights.

In addition to the recent reduction in summer fares, AirTran Airlines has added a new destination to their already long list of areas they serve. They will now have daily service from the Baltimore/Washington D.C. Area to Bermuda. The flights will leave Baltimore at 12:55pm and arrive in Bermuda at 4:15pm. The return flights depart Bermuda at 5:05pm and arrive in Baltimore at 7:40pm daily. This is yet another example of a popular destination that is being served by AirTran Airlines. They are offering fares of $158 round trip for the new flight for a limited time, most travel dates for this fare are mid week. They have also announced similar mid week specials to a variety of other destinations with round-trip fares of around $200. All of these reduced fares are forcing their competitors to follow suit which is a good thing for consumers as a whole.

With the designation of being a ‘discount airline’ you would think that this title would indicate you will be giving up service and quality to account for the lower prices. This couldn’t be any further from the truth and is indicated by AirTran Airlines number one ranking in quality. There are also two other discount airlines in the top 5 US Airlines, in terms of overall quality. The top five airlines in terms of overall quality, in order from 1st to 5th, are: AirTran, Hawaiian, Jet Blue, Alaska, and Southwest.

These so called ‘discount airlines’ seem to have a tight grasp on how to provide their customers with both low fares and high quality service. Maybe the large non-discount airlines could learn a thing or two by following the example being set. The one thing that is clear through all of this is that as airline customers we are benefiting greatly from the fierce competition between the airlines to provide low fares and high quality service.
